Why Your Product Photos Aren't Showing Up in Google Images: A 2026 Guide for European E-commerce SMBs

ARES

The Traffic Source Most E-commerce Sites Ignore

Google Images still drives meaningful traffic for e-commerce, yet most European SMB stores treat product photography as a design task rather than an SEO one. The photos look great; Google just can't read them properly.

File Names and Alt Text: The Two Most Skipped Steps

A file named "IMG_4821.jpg" tells Google nothing. Renaming it to something descriptive like "womens-leather-jacket-black.jpg" is step one. Alt text matters just as much, for both screen readers and search: a sentence that actually describes color, material, and use case outperforms a lazy "image1" tag every time.

AVIF and WebP: Speed and Quality Together

JPEG is still common in 2026, but it's no longer the best choice. AVIF delivers roughly half the file size of JPEG at equivalent quality, while WebP cuts 25-35% off. Many European SMB stores are still shipping 2-3MB product photos — a direct hit to both page speed and mobile conversion.

Responsive Images: One Size Doesn't Fit All

Serving the same 1200px-wide image to a mobile visitor as to a desktop one wastes bandwidth for no benefit. Using srcset to deliver device-appropriate image sizes is both a speed win and, increasingly, a visual search ranking signal.

Image Sitemaps Are Still Underused

Most European e-commerce sites have a standard XML sitemap but skip a dedicated image sitemap. For catalogs with hundreds of products, explicitly telling Google which images belong to which page meaningfully improves image search visibility — and it's a five-minute technical fix most agencies skip.

How Many Images Does a Product Page Actually Need?

A single flat product shot isn't enough anymore. A clean-background hero shot, a scale-reference image, a close-up of material or texture, and a lifestyle shot showing the product in use — that combination lifts both conversion rate and image search visibility.

At Ares Yazılım, we treat image SEO as a foundation for e-commerce projects — including for exporters in Bursa and Istanbul selling into EU markets — not an afterthought bolted on after launch.
