Search Console and GA4 for European SMEs: What to Check in Your First Month, GDPR-Aware
Many European small businesses install Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 (GA4), then rarely open them. Others open them and drown in charts. This guide covers what to look at during the first month, and how GDPR consent affects the numbers you see.
Two tools, two different questions
Search Console shows what happens before a visitor reaches your site: which queries you appear for, how often you are clicked, and which pages Google has indexed. GA4 shows what happens afterwards: which pages people read, and whether they submit a form, click a phone number or complete a purchase.
Keeping the two apart helps you diagnose problems. If impressions grow in Search Console but nobody contacts you in GA4, the issue is probably your page content or call to action, not your ranking. If GA4 shows visitors but Search Console shows few impressions, your traffic comes from other channels and SEO is not yet doing much work.
1. Queries: how do people find you?
Open the Performance report and look at the last 28 days. Ask two questions. Which queries bring impressions that you never targeted? These are the cheapest source of new content ideas. And which queries have many impressions but few clicks? That usually points to a weak title or meta description, and rewriting it to match the search intent is often the fastest win.
If you serve several European markets, filter by country and language. A query that performs in Germany may tell a very different story in Spain, and one generic page rarely serves both well.
2. Pages: what content earns its place?
Switch to the Pages tab. Are your service pages getting impressions, or only blog posts? If blog posts dominate, check that each one links clearly to the relevant service page. If a service page is invisible, it may need more depth or stronger internal links.
3. Indexing: are your important pages in Google?
The page indexing report lists which URLs are indexed and why others are not. Not every exclusion is an error: filtered pages and redirects are often excluded on purpose. But if a page you just published appears as "Crawled, currently not indexed" or "Discovered, currently not indexed", review its depth, uniqueness and internal links. For new pages, requesting indexing through the URL Inspection tool is a reasonable habit.
4. GA4: track events, not just sessions
Session counts alone do not tell you whether the site works. For a service business, the events that matter are contact form submissions, phone clicks, email clicks and messaging-button clicks. Mark them as key events, otherwise GA4 cannot show which channel brings enquiries. Online shops should track product views, add-to-cart and purchases, so you can see exactly where visitors drop off.
5. Real-user experience
Core Web Vitals and mobile usability in Search Console rely on real visitor data. On low-traffic sites this report can stay empty for a while, which is normal. Once data appears, prioritise the URL groups marked as poor.
GDPR and consent: your numbers will be incomplete
Under the GDPR and the ePrivacy rules, analytics cookies generally need valid consent in the EU. Visitors who decline will be missing from some reports, and tools such as Consent Mode may fill part of the gap with modelled data. Treat your GA4 figures as a trend rather than an exact count, compare month to month instead of obsessing over single days, and consult a qualified legal adviser about your consent setup.
A simple monthly routine
Twenty minutes a week is enough. Note which queries gained or lost impressions in Search Console, check how many key events GA4 recorded, and glance at the indexing report for new warnings. At the end of the month, answer one question: which page turns visitors into enquiries, and which one only attracts traffic?
